Melendez Imports
About This Spot
Melendez Imports settles into the heart of Berrien Springs as a warm, unpretentious hub where two rich culinary traditions—Mexican and Caribbean—come together in harmony. Walking through its doors, you’re greeted by a cozy, lively atmosphere that hums with the casual rhythm of a neighborhood gathering place. The pace here feels inviting rather than rushed, a space where locals chat comfortably over familiar flavors and the clinking of dishes creates a soothing soundtrack.
The heart of Melendez Imports is its kitchen, serving up authentic, comforting plates that wear their heritage with pride. The menu unfolds like a story told through food: from hand-crafted empanadas that pair perfectly with freshly made salsas to juicy, spice-kissed tacos that surprise with their depth and character. Here, you can taste the care infused in every bite—whether it’s the tender slow-cooked oxtail or a perfectly fluffed side of rice—each dish speaks of home and tradition without fanfare.
What makes Melendez especially inviting is how it embraces both Mexican and Caribbean flavors without feeling divided. It’s a space that recognizes how food connects us, bridging cultures through shared warmth and bold tastes. The aromas of jerk chicken mingle effortlessly alongside slow-simmered stews and crispy, golden plantains, inviting diners to explore beyond the familiar while feeling instantly at ease.
The service adds to the neighborhood feel—friendly and attentive in equal measure, making each visit feel a little like catching up with old friends. While the restaurant often fills up on weekends, a call ahead smooths the way, encouraging a relaxed experience even on busy days.
Stepping out, many linger just a bit longer, grabbing something special from their eclectic market corner—a little glimpse of the wider world through a curated selection of imports and fresh produce. It’s this blend of tastes, textures, and human moments that makes Melendez Imports more than just a meal—it’s a local discovery worth savoring again and again.

I had their oxtail soup which was EXCELLENT!! The rice was so perfectly fluffed. The oxtail was SUPER tender. The plantains were plain but still excellent! Their horchata is FRESH not premixed. Omg soooo good! My husband had the curry and jerk chicken. The chicken was FULL of flavor. I love how they have two different cultural foods in one restaurant. GREAT JOB MELENDEZ FAMILY!!!

Great Mexican comfort food! My favorite thing to get while eating here is their made to order plantain & cheese empanadas!!! They have quality service too. They also offer a wide variety of international grocery items that's worth checking out.

WOW! Go here. Top marks. Staff was amazing in both store and restaurant. The food was amazing. My favorite rice in a mexican restaurant ever, no embellishment. Friend had tamales which were superb. I had three tacos, the meat was on point for each. Usually when i sample tacos there is one the place does well and the rest are okay, not here. Their chicken is jerk which was quite a surprise and great. There is a double cooler full of fun drinks to try. They have a Caribbean night once a week im dying to make it to. Store is stocked with multiple countires particulars. There is a small college near by and the international students get what they miss most to order. This place is 45 minutes from anywhere i go when i return to see family, but will definitely make it back.

I always suggest to call ahead and place your order, especially on Fridays. They are really busy. Great authentic food. I love how you can get Caribbean food and Mexican food all at the same place.

Shopped on the market side. Produce over ripe. Lots of fruit flies. Some great prices some high. However the unique items makes it well worth your time to look and shop

Great food selection, both Mexican and carribean dishes. Tacos are well portioned. Empanadas were stuffed and came very fresh and hot. Fountain soda available as well as bottled drinks. Grocery store bas many Latin and Asian selection.

The food here is super good. It’s really authentic. You do have to pay for chips and salsa, but it’s not a big deal to me. They have groceries and produce here, too. They also have lots of cool Mexican candy, popsicles and drinks. The dine-in area is not super big but there’s always plenty of seating.
